A Shot in the Dark
by K.A. Stewart
Roc, $7.99, 306 pp
Release Date: July 5, 2011
A Shot in the Dark is a Jesse James Dawson novel.

What is a champion gonna do when he lacks magic and has more demon challenges than everybody else? Get banged up a whole lot.

Jesse has a great cover with tattoos, piercings and a job in a headshop. His wife is a powerful witch and he has a batch of kids and a house. He and his apprentice practice martial arts in the middle of the night. Oh yes, and he has a personal demon whom he calls Axel. His side job as a champion is saving peoples souls who made bargains with Demons.

When Jesse goes on his annual camping trip with friends, a pack of creatures summoned from Hell try to wipe them out. They had a friend of Jesse's doctor who turns out to be a magic wielding priest from a religious group in opposition to the champions. {secret} who saves the group They are also saved by a huge mastiff that senses the baddies and will tear them apart.

Plenty of humor and action. The characters are fun and well-drawn. This is a series that honors Jim Butcher but doesn't copy and I have become a fan. This is worth collecting. Enjoy. I’d give it 5 stars if I had a scale. ~~ Pam Allan
