Cursed
by Benedict Jacka
Ace, $7.99, 293pp
Release Date: May 29, 2012

This continues the Alex Verus series begun with Fated.

Alex Verus was a little-known magic shop proprietor in London until his second sight let him defeat dark mages. He is trying to keep his head down, train his apprentice, and keep cursed artifacts out of the wrong hands. Then he runs into the resurgence of a forbidden ritual, harvesting the life force of magical creatures and destroying them. Humans are next.

Hired to investigate, Alex finds not everyone wants it stopped. He must separate ally from enemy and stay alive. He may see the future but how much longer will he have one?

O my, would Dresden love this protagonist. With a beautifully realized world and a unique protagonist fighting the dark forces, Jacka gives you a thriller in urban fantasy that will keep you glued to the book and looking for more. I've been collecting Jim Butcher; now, I am a follower of Jacka and in pursuit of Fated. Must be destiny, because I am running out of bookcase. I love it and if you like Jim Butcher, you will too. Enjoy. ~~ Pam Allan
