Deathless
by Catherynne M. Valente
Tor, $14.99, 352pp
Release Date: February 14, 2012

A new imagining of the Russian boogey-man, Koschei the Deathless. Set in Russia just after the great revolution, the tale follows Marya Morevena from seeing the birds who would become her brothers-in-law, to becoming an officer in the CCCP. She has visits from house gnomes, and can see the magic behind the walls of the worlds.

The story could easily have been written by any Russian author of the early 20th century. The details and pathos are so much in the format of Russian novels I was reminded of Dovstyevsky.

The story is straightforward but it is full of magic and the improbable. It is a bit long but like any good Russian author Cat keeps you interested and give great value for the read.

Very highly recommended ~~ Bob LaPierre
