In Kuxortal, burrowers are the lowest caste, living and excavating older civilizations. Simsa was found in a trash heap by her mentor, looking like no race ever seen. After her mentor dies, she becomes prey and in trying to flee, she ends up being chased with her last customer. As they flee and seek a missing starman-brother, Simsa becomes a sought-after treasure and the last remaining foreunner.
