Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences #1: Phoenix Rising
by Pip Ballantine
HarperCollins, $7.99, 416pp
Release Date: April 26, 2011
I got the second book in this series and enjoyed it so much I had to have the first.

We start off with a bang, as our heroine rescues our hero. But Eliza D. Braun was not supposed to rescue Wellington Books, she was supposed to kill him. Her punishment is to be removed from field work and go off to the basement Archives to work with Wellington filing and cataloging. Of course, this doesn’t last long and soon Eliza is surreptitiously investigating one of the unsolved Cases of the Unknown, with Wellington’s reluctant help.

This does a good job of setting up the characters and their world. And while this mystery is wrapped up there are hints of mysteries to come in both Wellington and Eliza’s past. Highly recommended. - Stephanie L Bannon
