Death s Rival
by Faith Hunter
Roc, $7.99, 336pp
Release Date: October 2, 2012
This is the fourth novel in the Jane Yellowrock series, following Skinwalker, Blood Cross and Mercy Blade.

Jane is a shapeshifting skinwalker who can turn into any animal she wants though she shares her body with the soul of a mountain lion, Beast. As she searched for clues to her past, she worked as a vampire hunter, until she was hired by a New Orleans vampire to protect them.

Jane was trying to get used to having her enemy, Leo Pelliser, as her boss but now a rival is out to take Leo’s place. Along with worrying about who is trying to take over as the new Master Vampire of New Orleans, there is a mysterious plague that is hitting the vampires and making their masters vulnerable to attack. It is up to Jane to solve both problems, while making sure she doesn’t get killed herself.

Reeling from the loss of her friends in the previous novel, this installment sees several new characters introduced as well as seeing Beast become an even more distinct character.

While it is the fourth novel, it can be read as a stand alone but for the maximum enjoyment it’s recommended to read the series in order for the pleasure of seeing Jane grow. I highly recommend the entire series and eagerly look forward to the next book, Blood Trade, coming in April. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
