Downward to the Earth
by Robert Silverberg
Orb Books, $16.00, 254pp
Release Date: August 7, 2012
First serialized in 1969 in Galaxy magazine, this is the story of a company man's return to a postcolonial world and the mythic journey he takes to be reborn. The author was inspired by a trip to Africa , and was so directly influenced by Joseph Conrad's story Heart of Darkness that he named one of the main characters Kurtz. In a new preface written in 2011, the author details how he underestimated the novel when he wrote it, but now agrees with most people that it is one of his best. I've read more than a couple of Silverberg's and I agree with him. ~~ Mike Griffin
