I read this without having read the first book in the series, Archon, which left me lost for portions of this story. I would recommend reading Archon before diving into this book. That said, this is the story of Angela, the Archon whose choices will determine the fate of the universe in the battle between Heaven and Hell. We have angels (not all of them good), an epic journey to save Angela’s best friend, the atmospheric city/island of Luz, ruled by the Vatican but existing in a medieval world of gothic spires and candles in the midst of the 21st century, crows that are more than they seem, Jinn, demons and so much more. The story moves along quickly and the atmosphere is creepy, I enjoyed the read but I am not completely sure of all that went on. This may be due to lack of reading the first book in the trilogy but even so, some of the plot threads took going back to re-read portions to be sure I knew what was going on. That said I intend to find Archon and read it and then re-read this in anticipation of the release of the conclusion. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
