Watchers in the Night
by Jenna Black
Tor, $14.99, 332pp
Publication Date: January 14, 2014
Ex-cop Carolyn Matthews is now a private detective. She left the force two years earlier when her fiancé, Gray James, disappeared without a trace after jilting her almost at the altar. Now, as she tries to get on with her life, everything changes when Gray appears one night to stave off a man trying to rape her and then disappears again. This time she tracks him down but is she prepared for the secrets he is hiding?

While Gray never stopped loving her, he found it necessary to distance himself totally from his past life when a stripper at his bachelor party was a vampire that turned him. Now he finds himself caught between two factions, the Killers who are vampires who prey on humans, and the Guardians who hunt the killers. Unwilling to join either faction, Gray walks an uneasy path between the two, always watched by the Guardians with suspicion but when a vampire serial killer begins to target Carolyn Gray, he finds himself working with Carolyn to find the killer and evade the Guardians.

This is the first in a new series and was a surprisingly quick read. The characters and the set up were interesting. The plot moved along well. I look forward to the next book in the series, Secrets in the Shadows. Recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
