The Collected Stories of Frank Herbert is billed as “the most complete collection of Herbert's short fiction ever assembled - thirty-seven stories originally published between 1952 and 1979, plus one story, "The Daddy Box," that has never been appeared before.”
I am a fan of Herbert’s Dune and in some of these stories we can see the seeds of the ideas that became Dune. That said, the quality is very uneven. In keeping with the time frame in which most were written, our hero is pretty much always male, usually American and women exist mostly to be rescued or just as scenery. I am not sure I would willingly go through these again but, for the Frank Herbert fan, this is a must have for your collection as well as an interesting view of how Herbert’s skill and ideas grew over time. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
