The Abyss Beyond Dreams
by Peter F Hamilton
Del Rey, $8.99, 640pp
Published: September 2015

In 3326, Nigel Sheldon, one of the founders of the Commonwealth, receives a visit from the Raiel. They have come in an attempt to convince Nigel to participate in a desperate scheme to infiltrate the Void, an enigmatic construct at the core of the galaxy that threatens the existence of all that lives.

Once inside the Void, Nigel discovers a lost human colonization fleet, finding descendants on the Earth-like planet of Bienvenido. Preying on the inhabitants of Bienvenido are the Fallers, vicious killers who may hold the secret to destroying the Void.

This book is apparently part of a larger series about the Commonwealth but it does not seem to be necessary to have read the previous novels. While I am sure I am missing some of the background on the Commonwealth and probably some of the characters, I really did not feel lost at any point. I am still not sure what is the real nature of the Void. I am hoping the next book will make that clear. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
