Hymn
Final Volume of the Psalms of Isaak
by Kevin Scholes
Tor, $29.99, 414 pages
Published: December 2017
Here is the conclusion to Scholes’ five part epic and labour of love, the Psalm of Isaak series that began with Lamentation and continued through Canticle, Antiphon, and Requiem. The element of sorrow, the threnodic chord that sounds through much of the epic is transformed as many, if not all, of the protagonists find soul-satisfying resolutions.
The writing is strongly evocative; senses, imagery, feelings and the heightened sense of self that comes upon one in times of crisis sweep the reader along. Scholes has worked literary magic with this series, and while the setting is futuristic and events are fantastic, the characters and their experiences are clearly based on the author’s own experiences and encounters. There is the ring of truth here. ~~ Chris Wozney
