This is the sequel to “Dreadnought” the first superhero story I’ve ever read or heard of with a transgender person. Danny was a boy until the day the superhero Dreadnought died in front of him and gifted him with the Dreadnought mantle. One of the features of Dreadnought’s power (Danny is the third to wear the mantle) is that the inheritor gets the body they always wanted. Danny, of course, wanted to be a girl.
Now that Danny has some experience being Dreadnought she thought life would start to get better. She has a job for the city and shares the responsibility for protecting the city with Greywytch. They don’t get along too well; Greywytch will not accept Danny’s transgender change and along with Danny’s court case to emancipate herself, it feels like no one accepts her as she is. But when someone starts financially helping her parents to block the emancipation, and no whitecapes will answer her call to join the Legion, and Nemesis is still coming and no one understands that…well, it just starts to feel a bit coordinated…
This was a terrific story: a strong plot, passionate and interesting characters, a fast pace what’s not to love? For this diehard superhero fan, this was all kinds of fun. I’m really looking forward to the next book. ~~ Catherine Book
