Midnight Riot
Rivers of London #1
by Ben Aaronovitch
Del Rey, $7.99, 401pp
Published: February 2011

Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Police Constable Peter Grant is headed for assignment in the Case Progression Unit when fate intervenes. A brutal murder sees Peter on the scene guarding the perimeter along with other probationary officers. An eyewitness to the crime talks to him, describing the murder in detail, including the odd fact that the murderer seemed to change his face and then things get odder, the witness is a ghost.  Returning to the scene the next night in search of the ghostly witness he meets Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale and learns that ghosts are real as well as magic. Taken on as Nightingale’s apprentice, and saved from a dreary life in Case Progression Unit (basically paperwork all the time) Peter is now in training as a wizard. As they work to find the murderer Peter meets many otherworldly people from vampires to Father Thames.

A delightful mix of magic and the mundane. I am looking forward to the next entries in this series. Highly recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
