Playing to the Gods
The Glass Thorns #5
by Melanie Rawn
Tor, $18.00, 446pp
Published: August 2017

In this fifth book final volume of the acclaimed series Glass Thorns, Melanie Rawn has created a superb high fantasy series that blends the worlds of magic, theater, art, and politics.

The boys are at the top of their theatrical game. Their only real competition for the hearts and gold of the public are the Shadowshapers. Nevertheless, the past years of financial struggle, since their manager proved to have been embezzling, have taken a toll on the group's creativity.

A shocking event brings all that to an end and brings Touchstone back together to create a play that will rattle the ceilings and shatter all the glass in palaces and theaters alike. An ancient conflict will come to a violent conclusion on stage, and all the gods will be watching.

Having read the series previously, I had not had the chance to read this final book in the Glass Thorns series before. I finally carved out space to read it and found myself enjoying it as much as the first book. I found it intriguing and magical, blending magic, the theater, art and politics to create a very different fantasy series from others in the genre.

One of the reasons that I do enjoy it is the depiction of the theatrical creations, especially using magic to create some of the same effects costumes and make-up do in our world. The characters of Cayden and Mieka draw you into their relationships and the drama of their lives, each complication or event giving the reader insight into either the characters or the world. I especially love how each of them depicts the impact of the theater on their lives and how Cayden talks about writing. I also love the elsewhens, how the visions cross time to help change the fates of those Cayden cares for.

Beyond the characters, I like the political intrigue around the Knights from old and their true nature. How important that is becomes clear as the reader delves into the story. While the story is long, the finale rushes you to the end with action and with a racing pulse as Cayden and Mieka attempt to figure out a solution to save the people they care about.

I do find the ending a bit rushed and this novel is very male-focused. While the story does bring about the importance of the female characters and their critical role in society, like the history it is based on, this novel is focused on the men of this world. I would love a novel or story from the females of this world.

Despite my desire to see more from a female point of view, this novel is excellent. The magic is unusual and different, blending the theater and art with magic and politics. The intrigue keeps you entertained. I found the novel quite intriguing and magical.

Rating: 5 out of 5 withies ~~ Andrea Rittschof
