Nobody Likes a Goblin
by Ben Hatke
First Second, $17.99, 55pp
Published: June 2016

This charmingly illustrated children’s story is wonderful!   With maybe 20 words to a page, you’d think it would be a very quick read.

But you simply cannot read this story fast!   Ben Hatke’s fantasy gothic watercolor illustrations (people, creatures, scenery) are delightfully detailed and add so much to the story!  Reading this book with your child is a very rewarding experience.  Each time you look through it you see something new, details in the illustrations that are picked up by a child’s imagination, that give you a sense of wonder!

Goblin is happy.  He lives in a dungeon full of treasure with his one Very Best Friend: Skeleton.  But one fateful day, the dungeon is stormed by Adventurers!  While the frightened Goblin hid under his bed, they stole everything… including Skeleton!

Goblin must now venture out – into the wide world – to find and rescue his friend.  In his travels he learns that nobody likes a goblin!  In just asking for help from others, everyone wants to “GET THAT GOBLIN!” They chase him into a cave where he awaits his doom, only to find… someone who likes goblins!  He has friends!  They team up to defend him, rescue Skeleton, and chase off the people and elves and the Adventurers to an absolutely perfect and happy ending (he even gets the girl!) ~~ Marie Davis
