Science Comics: Coral Reefs: Cities of the Ocean
by Maris Wicks
First Second, $9.99, 119pp
Published: April 2016

Why should we dive into coral reefs?  We get to hang out with a cute, friendly (and very smart!) glasses-wearing goldfish who tells us the story of coral and why coral reefs are important to the environment.  He also tells great jokes!

This story is a tour of his home.  Like a really good realtor, this adorable guy knows all the in-depth reasons we should care about how beautiful and important his home is to us.  We learn that corals are not plants, they are animals that form a bio-diverse habitat that keeps the oceans and the Earth healthy.  He teaches us about their life cycle, how and where reefs form, the ecosystem they support, and their connection to the rest of the planet.

About a quarter of the book is devoted to climate change, with very good reasons as to why it matters (oxygen!)   Our fishy narrator gives us steps we can take to improve our environment to keep the coral reefs and our planet healthy.

As a comic book, Coral Reefs is a good resource for keeping the attention of the reader and gets us excited by science and informed, and encourages us to learn more.   With colorful and cute illustrations and glossy pages, this is a great graphic novel for at home or in the classroom.  This is a very engaging science book that I’m passing on to my granddaughter!  ~~  Marie Davis
