This is a gorgeous graphic novel with an original story. This is the second in the trilogy and the story continue with Calexa staying with Lucinda off and on as the weather continues towards winter. One night she hears noises and surprises an assailant in the kitchen who has attacked Lucinda. As it happened in the last book with Marla, Lucinda’s spirit enters Calexa and she’s able to talk to Lucinda. Lucinda didn’t see her attacker’s face and has only suspicions of who it might be. With her best friend and support gone, Calexa feels more vulnerable than ever. She finally accepts the idea of reaching out to Mr. Kelner, the cemetery caretaker. Lucinda also advises her to call someone named Griggs. All of which tends to stoke Calexa’s paranoia. She still worries that any attention will get her killed by whomever had left her to die in the cemetery in the first book.
Kelner isn’t at home but his son is and he becomes intrigued by this mysterious girl. Griggs is desperate to contact Calexa but the reader isn’t sure exactly why any more than is Calexa. Meanwhile, Calexa has a new worry: Lucinda’s killer saw her and might come back to finish the job; although Calexa didn’t see the face and couldn’t identify him or her.
As before, I love the art and colors. The story was fun but didn’t really advance any understanding of Calexa’s abilities or bring her any closer to finding out who wants her dead.
