A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or
Peeing but Using the Bathroom as an Escape
Written by Joe Pera
Illustrated by Joe Bennett
Forge, $15.99, 128pp
Published: November 2021

This book called out to me when I heard the title, for I can be guilty of spending time in the bathroom at home longer then I need to, getting lost in playing video games on my phone, enjoying a little time to myself. And yes, I did read this book while hiding out in the bathroom.

I think it's a great book to keep in the bathroom, inspiration if you will, for those folks who use the littlest room to escape their families, friends or the anxiety in themselves.

The author, Joe Pera is a well-regarded comedian, from what I hear about him. (Sorry, I had never heard of him before reading this book.) I enjoyed his strange pearls of wisdom to help get the reader focused on getting back out there and facing their fears or maybe to entertain them for a little bit as they gain some peaceful "me" time before rejoining the world.

Though I enjoy Joe Bennett's anthropomorphic animals better, from "I will Not Die Alone", there were some very agreeably weird and interesting illustrations to accompany the prose in this book.

It's a very quick read with some humorous and thoughtful moments. I liked it and know at least a few people who I'd give a copy to as a gift, to help them while away their "me" times in the bathroom. ~~ Dee Astell
