Cookie & Broccoli: Book of Secrets!
By Bob McMahon
Dial Books, $12.99, 96pp
Published: November 2022

Cookie & Broccoli: Book of Secrets! is the third book in the Cookie and Broccoli series by Bob McMahon. It's a graphic novel aimed at 5-8 year olds.

Synopsis:  Shh . . . Cookie and Broccoli's lips are sealed! Broccoli reveals the embarrassing nickname his grandma gave him as a baby, and Cookie laments that he’s never had a nickname . . . or has he? Then the adorable duo set out to cure Broccoli’s boredom, for which Talking Rock gives them a cryptic clue: the solution is the opposite of boredom. What could that be? And finally, Cookie confesses his fear of The Scary Forest near their school and Broccoli shares a surprising secret of his own. But the fun doesn’t stop there: Readers will love solving a secret message at the end of the book with a special decoder

I had a lot of fun with this book. I sat down with my six year old granddaughter and we read this book together. I gave everyone silly voices and we laughed and discussed who our favorite characters were. We're both partial to the little blueberry who always had something to say, but doesn't seem to be noticed by anyone except the reader.

I was very pleased with how well the story and graphics kept her engaged. She sat through the whole book without losing attention which isn't always the case, especially when the book has over ninety pages.

We even decoded the secret message at the end of the book, but we won't tell you what it is! You'll have to find out for yourself.

I also liked the fact that the book had three different stories, each one with a little life lesson, delivered in a light hearted, whimsical way.

My granddaughter is now a fan of Cookie and Broccoli and I will be picking her up the other two books in the series, as well as keeping an eye out for future releases. ~~ Dee Astell
