Doodleville Art Attacks is book two in the Doodleville graphic novel series.
It can be read as a standalone, and is aimed at 8 -12 year olds.
"Drew and her mischievous doodles are back, and planning a heist-in-reverse at the Art Institute of Chicago, in the sequel to Doodleville"
Synopsis:
DREW NEVER MEANT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN.
She didn’t mean for her doodle Mike to steal the centuries-old hat. She also didn’t mean for another doodle, Levi, to steal the centuries-old baby (when he was supposed to be returning the coveted hat). And she definitely didn’t mean to send the Art Institute of Chicago into a downward spiral of art-on-art combat. She just wanted to fix a simple mistake! Now everything’s gone wrong, and it’s mayhem at the museum. Drew is sure she’s going to become Public Enemy No. 1, wanted posters and all. But it turns out Drew and her art club might be the museum’s only chance for resolution and restoration. Can they make things right before countless priceless masterpieces are destroyed forever?
Our story begins with Drew trying to fix a wrong caused by her doodles. She asks her friends from the art club to lend a hand, returning that baby to a painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She'd do it herself, but the institute's director is watching out for her, believing she's involved in the art theft.
The club members agree to help her and convince their art teacher to accompany them on an outing to the Institute. He agrees and becomes an unwitting accomplice to their plans to set things right. Thus begins an avalanche of problems that spiral out of control, making things much worse than the original situation that began it all.
In the aftermath of the doodles running amok and paintings getting destroyed, the students are kicked out of the institute and their teacher put on leave until the situation is resolved.
Things begin to esculate when Hannah, the baby's mother, thinking Dorian Gray is responsible for her baby going missing, destroys his precious cat statue. Dorian gathers a dark art army and Hannah gathers warriors of righteous rage and both sides are getting ready to go to war with each other.
The Institute's director, Cornelia Krong, at the suggestion of her grandson, requests the kids from the art club come back and try to set things to rights. Things once again get out of control and the situation becomes even more volatile, this time setting several of the students against each other for using unnecessary force and magic against some of the paintings. Cornelia evacuates the students when Dorian Gray becomes cursed and starts running amok.
With all the art students fighting and at odds, the paintings at the Institute at war and being destroyed, can Drew and crew figure out how to undo all that has been done and set things to rights again?
This graphic novel is very creative and filled with original ideas and inspiration. The illustrations fit the story nicely, with lots of attention to the little details. The characters share their feelings and emotions with the reader, thus making one feel more invested in the story and the outcome.
I enjoyed and appreciated the originality of the story and look forward to reading and sharing with my grandchildren more about the world of Doodleville. ~~ Dee Astell
