Louie and Bear Bite Back: A Graphic Novel
by Brady Smith
Aimed at ages 7-10
Penguin Workshop, $14.99, 160pp
Published: September 2022

'Louie and Bear Bite Back' is a hardbound graphic novel created for kids 7-10 years old. The graphics are colorfully bright and stimulating and the characters and creatures are wild and wondrous. It's a sequel to 'Louie and Bear in the Land of Anything Goes'.

The story begins with Louie, Bear and many of their friends still in the strange and interesting Land of Anything Goes, not ready to join the others back on earth yet. They have an established village and use teamwork to take care of any of the bizarre critters that occasionally pop up to disturb their happy lifestyle.

Everthing is going well until, unbeknownst to our good guys, Panda Brain, the bad guy in our story, finds the Imaginator, a device that was used by Hairy Larry in the previous book to create or transform anything the user imagines. Panda Brain begins wreaking havok and crazy things start happening to all the inhabitants in the Land of Anything Goes. The kids start going through changes, including Louie losing his super strength and Bear sprouting wings. The village keeps getting attacked by a shape-shifting monster that generates lightning and it starts raining fish in the land.

Realizing that it's not safe to stay in this world anymore, Louie and friends set off on a quest to find a way back to Earth, trying to keep one step ahead of the monster and other dangers on this adventure to find a way home. They meet new friends and learn many things, coming to realize that some of the changes they are dealing with may lead to dire consequences for some of them.

Will they manage to figure out what's going on and find a way home before they are permanently transformed or will this be the end for our friends???

Though this is a sequel, it can be read as a standalone, but, personally, I think it is a richer story if you have previously read the first book before reading this one. I like the world building and additional characters that were added to this story. I gave my 8-year-old grandson a copy of this book as well as 'Louie and Bear in the Land of Anything Goes' for Christmas and I look forward to hearing what he has to say about them when he finishes reading. ~~ Dee Astell
