Bug Sandwich
by Brady Smith (Author, Illustrator)
Ages 3-7 years
Nancy Paulsen Books, $19.99, 32pp
Published: May 2023

Bug Sandwich is a hardbound fully illustrated picture book aimed at kids 3-7 years old.

Author and illustrator Brady Smith does a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story with bright, eye-catching graphics and a revenge story on a child's level of appreciation.

This is the story of a special boy, but what made this boy special is that bugs love him, that is they love to bite him!

All day every day they bit him. He tried everything to avoid being bitten, but nothing seemed to work. Then one day, he got an idea. He was going to bite those bugs back. In fact, he was going to make them into a Bug Sandwich!

He imagined he'd be made a national hero if he caught and ate every type of biting bug, so he set about hunting them all down. He found that it's not as easy to find them when you actually go looking for them and, along the way, he learned that some of them do some cool things, like how the bees build their houses and how the spider makes its web.

Regardless of how interesting he was finding some of the things the bugs could do, he had set himself a mission and he had already started catching those critters and was plotting out exactly what condiments he was going to put on the sandwich when he ate those bugs.

I'm not going to spoil the rest of the story and tell you whether or not our special boy actually ate his bug sandwich, but I will tell you that the end of the story has a bit of a twist and left my granddaughters and I in grossed-out giggles.

I was looking forward to reading this book with my granddaughters, since I had previously read and reviewed Brady Smith's Louie and the Bear books and became a fan of his awesome storytelling.

My granddaughters and I really liked the story and were impressed with the bright colorful graphics. We had a lot of fun reading this book together and can't wait to see what Brady Smith comes up with next. ~~ Dee Astell, assisted by Aubrey & Paisely Hernandez
