Dear Unicorn
Written By Josh Funk
Illustrated by Charles Santoso
Ages 4-8
Viking Books for Young Readers, $18.99, 40pp
Published: September 2023

This picture book is aimed at 4 to 8-year-olds.

Through a school project in which the art class is partnering up with penpals, Constance and Nicole become acquainted by writing each other letters and sharing their artwork.

As time progresses through their correspondence, the reader realizes a few things about each character. Constance, who prefers to be called Connie, takes life a little more seriously than Nicole, who prefers a more whimsical approach and is called Nic by her friends.

When Connie complains that her mom made her help out at the animal shelter with a bunch of cats who get into everything while she's trying to paint, Nic comments how jealous she is that Connie got to hang out with cute fluffy kittens and how awesomely colorful they can be. When Nic writes about spending the day baking cupcakes for a friend's birthday, Connie replies she had to do chores all day yesterday, too.

While they share their art and activities with each other, they ask questions to get to know each other better. They have a lot of different opinions but they also find they have things in common, like that blue is their shared favorite color and they appreciate each other's art.

They look forward to getting a new letter and hearing what's going on with the each other as their friendship builds, and both are excitedly waiting for the upcoming penpal art festival where they will finally get to meet.

There is just one crucial thing that has been overlooked. Connie is completely unaware that Nic is a unicorn and Nic has no clue that Connie is a human. Though shocking when this comes out, this surprise does not distract from the friendship they have built through their letters.

My granddaughter Paisley and I took a little quiet time during her 7th birthday party to sit down and read this book together. We loved the story and wonderfully colorful illustrations that made up this book and enjoyed the time spent reading it together.

Thank you to Josh Funk and Charles Santoso for this fun and adorable story about friendship, art and overcoming differences. ~~ Dee Astell with input from Paisley Hernandez
