This adorable little picture book is aimed at ages three- to seven-years-olds.
This is the story of a timid jack-o'-lantern and the adventure on which he bravely embarks when his favorite toy mouse is blown away by a gust of wind. It's well told and easy to understand, though it's entirely told with pictures.
The jack-o'-lantern hunts high and low for it until he begins to hear a meowing not far off and realizes a big black cat has got his beloved toy in its mouth and begins to run off with it, beginning a merry chase that leads our little jack-o'-lantern to all kinds of unexpected places and encounters with a few unusual characters.
He is more than a little scared when he is led into a spooky forest and runs into a skull. They both scream and terrify each other but the skull isn't out to scare him on purpose; he's on the hunt for the rest of his body, which has gone off dancing in the woods. The jack-o'-lantern takes the time to lend a helping hand and reunites the skull with his body; in turn the skeleton returns the favor and helps send our hero in the right direction of the cat.
If you want to know where the story goes from there, you need to pick up this sweet book and find out for yourself.
I read this book with my four-year-old grandson and we both enjoyed the story.
The artwork is perfect to catch and hold the attention for young and old readers alike.
It's nicely colored and laid out well.
The story helps children to understand that trusting and believing in oneself can help overcome your fears and find your courage.
I enjoyed reading this book and would happily pick it up again to share with my younger grandchildren. ~~ Dee Astell
