What a Map Can Do
by Gabrielle Balkan (Author)
Alberto Lot (Illustrator)
Ages 3-5
Rise x Penguin Workshop, $18.99, 48pp
Published: July 2023

This hardbound book is aimed at 3-5 year olds, but I will say my nine-year-old granddaughter was as engaged in the graphics and maps as her six-year-old sister and really enjoyed this book.

‘What a Map Can Do’ is narrated by a raccoon character and is a wonderful introduction to learning about maps.

This unnamed raccoon takes us on an adventure using maps, starting small with a map of its room, finding things off the map located around it. It moves on to a map of the house and then the neighborhood. The story grows to include maps of the city, roads and parks in the area.

It introduces many different types of maps along the way: bus maps, trail maps, museum maps, star and weather maps and yes, even a map of inside the raccoon's body. It's full of humor and easy explanations for young map learners.

My granddaughters and I really enjoyed reading this book. We followed along with our narrator and interacted with the maps, finding items and choosing trails when we were asked to choose.

The maps and graphics are fantastically done and great to interact with. The story makes learning fun and humorous. It was truly enjoyable to share in the story adventure as my granddaughters learned about maps and how to use them. ~~ Dee Astell, assisted by Aubrey & Paisley Hernandez
