Batpig: Go Pig or Go Home
Batpig #3
by Rob Harrell (Author, Illustrator)
For ages 7-12 years
Dial, $14.99, 240pp
Published: March 2024

This fantastic graphic novel is the third installment in the Batpig series, and it features two complete stories, "Careful What you Wish For" and "Camp Danger".

In "Careful What you Wish For", Gary Yorkshire, a.k.a. Batpig, and his friends, Carl the Tuna and Brook the Bat, are up against some crazy magical characters after Gary is gifted with some magical powder. He needs to study for history and biology tests and leaves his books and the powder on his bedroom desk overnight. He awakens to the sudden appearance of Sharkraham Lincoln (half shark and half president), who helps Gary cheat his way through his tests and, in doing so, sets off a chain of events which even Batpig may have trouble defeating.

In "Camp Danger", the friends arrive at Camp Moldy Snout, with Gary hoping for some peaceful and enjoyable summer fun. When friendships develop and jealousy begins to fester, not to ignore a lake monster with a grumbly tummy and an old nemesis who arrives unexpectedly, Batpig has his hands full, especially since Gary had decided not to bring his costume along and now everyone at camp knows Batpig's secret identity.

The stories are well put-together and the graphic panels are easy to follow. The illustrations are stikingly bold and vibrantly drawn, visually enjoyable and complementary to the stories.

This was the first Batpig book that I had read and I was happy that it worked as a standalone as well as part of a series. In one of the stories, the author revisited one of Batpig's nemeses, and, for those unfamiliar with her, gave a little recap of their previous encounter, making it easy to follow along with how she fit into the story and series. Big kudos to the author for doing that.

I found this a very enjoyable read and look forward to reading more about Batpig with my grandchildren. ~~ Dee Astell
