Happiness According to Humphrey
by Betty G. Bierney
Age range 8-12
G.P. Putnam; $17.99; 131 pp
Published: May 2024

The cheerful classroom pet Humphrey the hamster returns in another adventurous story (aided by his close friend Og the Frog). The classroom has children with distinct traits: shy, timid, loud, quiet and boisterous. The variety makes the setting fun and colorful.

In this story Humphrey and his classmates meet with Happy, the reading therapy dog. Happy comes in with his handler and patiently listens to each child read from their favorite book. His patient demeanor helps those who are uncertain of their reading skills. And he allows hugs and pats and gives kisses in return.

One morning one of children comes in anxious and unhappy: Grandma Grace’s Jack Russell terrier has gone missing. With support from the school principal and Mrs. Brisbane, the teacher, a search for the terrier named Aggie is set-up. The whole community gets involved. The one clue they have is the Ding-a-Ling ice cream truck which was seen in Grandma Grace’s neighborhood when Aggie disappeared.

The book is a big hug of community feeling: no bullies, just kids that need help from their friends and the adults around them. And there is the delightful chatter box Humphrey and his best friend Og. This is the thirteenth chapter book in the series ~~ Sue Martin
