Like Lava In My Veins
by Derrick Barnes (Author) & Shawn Martinbrough (Illustrator)
Aimed at 5 to 8 years
Nancy Paulsen Books, $18.99, 40pp
Published: July 2023

Synopsis:   Bobby Beacon’s got fire flowing through his veins. And now he’s psyched to attend a new school that’ll help him get a better grip on his powers. But right off the bat, his new teacher is not too welcoming. That causes Bobby’s hot temper to land him in the principal’s office. It ain’t easy to stay calm when people don’t seem to understand you and are always pushing you to the edge. Good thing Bobby gets moved to a class with an understanding teacher who clues him in on ways to calm himself and shows him that caring for others is its own kind of superpower. With her help—and some cool new friends—he just might be on his way to becoming the best version of himself possible.

This graphic novel is vibrantly drawn and the fire is so bright and intense that you can almost feel the heat coming off the pages. The illustrations keep the story flowing and fill out the pages with lots of action and detail.

I read this book with my seven-year-old granddaughter, Paisley, who's full of energy and lava in her veins too. This book held her attention and kept her focused on the main character in the story; that puts it in the win category just for starters.

Paisley really liked that Bobby's new teacher, Miss Brooklyn, taught him how to calm his inner self and that she had a special Chill Zone in her classroom where students can go "to remove any silliness that might be cramped up in their bones."

When the Institute of Supervillains came to his school looking for him, Paisley also liked that he figured out how to protect himself from becoming a statue and then saving his classmates with his superpowers, evolving and controlling them by not letting his temper take over.

She also appreciated that Miss Brooklyn believed in second chances, which was not only important to the story arc but as a good life lesson as well.

We enjoyed “Like Lava in My Veins” and would recommend it for those young superheroes in your life. ~~ Dee Astell and Paisley Hernandez
