Programmed to Paint
Illustrated and written by Mauricio Abril
Ages 4-8 years
Penguin Workshop; $18.95, 48pp
Published: January 2024

Created by artist and Disney animator Abril, this is a delightful tale of the little robot named  Pintro who does everything perfect: math, gardening and baking. Intrigued by creating art he sets to work with his cat as subject matter.

But his effort is too, well…perfect. The painting is such perfection it isn’t art to Pintro.

He tries many times but it is just the same perfect picture of his cat.

Disheartened by his attempts, he decides to join an art class.

Here he learns that he CAN do art uniquely his own, “perfect” or not. That it is okay to make mistakes, that imperfection is not a bad thing.

This a lovely book to give a budding artist— a chance to stretch their wings and crayons and create what makes them happy! ~~ Sue Martin
