There Is a Bird On Your Head!
An Elephant and Piggie Book
written & Illustrated by: Mo Willems
Aimed at ages 2 to 6 years
Disney-Hyperion, $10.99, 64pp
Published: September 2007

Gerald, an elephant, and Piggie, take a wild stab, are best friends. In 'There is a Bird on My Head!', Gerald discovers that there is something worse than having a bird on his head. It's two birds on his head! Can Piggie help her best friend?

This illustrated book is from the 'Elephant and Piggie' book series and is aimed at children two to six years old.

My seven-year-old granddaughter Paisley usually helps me with my reviews when I'm doing children's books. If a book holds her attention and she can tell me what she liked and what was her favorite part, then I know it was worth a read and recommendation. I was all ears when she came to me and said that she had a book she wanted to read to me and get my opinion on.

The story begins with Gerald asking Piggie if there is something on his head. Piggie replies that yes, there is a bird on his head, which quickly escalates to two birds, after which Piggie tells him that they are love birds. Gerald wants to know how Piggie is so sure they are love birds. Piggie says she knows because they are now building a nest and laying eggs.

Gerald is not happy that two birds have decided to nest upon his head and start a family, to which Piggie points out that maybe Gerald should ask them to go somewhere else. The rest I'll leave up to the reader to discover how Gerald's request to the bird family turns out.

The characters are cute and simply illustrated, drawing little eyes to the expressive movements and faces they make in the book. It also uses speech bubbles, gray for Gerald and pink for Piggie, to make it easy to follow along with who's talking in the story.

I was a fan watching the joy on my granddaughter's face as she read me the story, then opened a discussion with me about the book, just like I do with her when I read her a story, to find out what I liked the most about it. I liked both characters, so different in temperament, but I can easily say that my actual favorite part was listening to her read with enthusiasm and the big smile when she finished sharing a treasured book with me. ~~  Dee Astell & Paisley Hernandez
