This book is part of a series, labelled 'What Do We Know About?', from the people behind the #1 New York Times bestselling 'Who Was?' series. This one aims to explore "the mysterious, the unknown, and the unexplained" and this time out tackles a particular example. "Is the Loch Ness Monster really lurking beneath Scottish waters, or is it just a myth? Find out all that there is to know about the most famous aquatic cryptid!"
The author covers the history of the creature in the loch, dating back all the way to the year 565 when Saint Columba is said to have encountered it. The story discusses all the photos and films that allegedly show proof of the monster's existence. It goes over all the groups who keep track of creature sightings, the expeditions and scientific tests that have all helped to provide clues about the Loch Ness Monster. It gives us a lot of information and leaves us to decide in our minds whether it's fact or fiction.
I liked how the book included information about other cryptids and lochs, with mention of their own creatures, and also included a detailed timeline of Nessie, next to a timeline of world events. The black and white illustrations throughout the book are a nice addition to the presentation.
Many years ago, I had one of the best experiences of my life getting to visit Scotland. My husband and I took a cruise on Loch Ness which is breathtaking and awe inspiring. Being a fan of Nessie, we also visited the Loch Ness Center in Drumnadrochit, on the shores of the loch, which covered many of the interesting facts found in this book.
There is a lot of information here that I had forgotten or missed on my tour, especially the timelines, so I really enjoyed all the things this book had to share and found it a good and interesting read. I would happily recommend it and share it with my grandchildren and friends. ~~ Dee Astell
