The Broken Land

This is the nineteenth entry in the People - First North Americans series which explores various cultures in prehistoric North America.  This is the third book in the People of the Longhouse quartet which started with People of the Longhouse and The Dawn Country and finishes with People of the Black Sun.

Set in 15th century America, this book finds the Iroquois nations in the midst of war. Our villain is a war-chief named Atotarho. He plans to destroy the entire Iroquois world and sends his warriors forth to kill, burn villages and take captives. Our heroes are disgraced warrior Odion now called Dekanawida or Sky Messenger, his sister Tutelo, Wrass - War Chief Hiyawento, Zateri and Baji, all of whom were taken captive as children and sold into slavery. Together they must find a way to bring five nations together to face the evil of Atotanho.

While this is the third in this series, once I got a few chapters in, I was able to easily follow the story without having read the first two books. The story held my interest and I want to see what happens next in People of the Black Sun (click here for review). The Gears have the knack for making the distance past come to life. Recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
