The Esoteric Order of Sherman - CD
by Norm Sherman drabblecast.org
Norm Sherman is a versatile writer, shifting styles dexterously and writing lyrics that catapult him into the stratospheric domain of great parody writers like Tom Lehrer, Tom Smith, and Weird Al Yankovic at his very best.
“Radioactive Runaway” is about Gamera and Daragon destroying
Tokyo
. Sung from the perspective of the forlorn scientist who raised the mutated turtle, it’s reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “75 Lines” is a fantastic riff on Bob Dylan.
Other tracks include “Heartache Over Innsmouth” for the Lovecraftians; “Babylon Battle of the Bands”, which is a showpiece number in rap; “Pimp My Satellite” which is exactly what it sounds like; and another favorite, “Sci Fi High” a homeboy’s commentary on surviving a futuristic or fannish high school. The song is chock full of references to TV shows, heroes, villains, and classic SF literature. From mournful ballads of unrequited weird/dangerous love to jive talkin’, this is genius parody. ~~ Chris R. Paige
