People of the Black Sun
by Kathleen O'Neal Gear & W Michael Gear
Tor, $7.99 528pp
Publication Date: August 27, 2013
This is the final installment in the Iroquios quartet following The People of the Longhouse, The Dawn Country and The Broken Land (reviewed here)

Dekanawida has become a prophet of immense power known as The Sky Messenger. Yet even as Chief Atotarho moves to subdue the five nations, people refuse to listen to Dekanawida’s message of peace. Then, during a battle, Dekanawida is able to call forth a great storm that scatters Atotarho’s forces.

Thousands now believe in the Great Law of Peace and have joined the League but

the People of the Mountain still refuse to join and keep harassing them. Destruction of all has been predicted if the warfare continues and, as all the signs Dekanawida has prophesied come true, there is one last chance to save the people and their world from complete destruction.

The past comes alive in the pages of the Gear’s books. That they are archaeologists as well as writers shows in the richness of detail found in their books. This is a page turner and, as fitting as it was, I cried at the end. Recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
