The Spook Lights Affair
Carpenterr & Quincannon #2
by Marcia Muller & Bill Pronzini
Forge, $24.99, 251pp
Publication Date: December 3, 2013
Our second outing in this delightful series finds Sabrina as bodyguard/chaperone to a young debutante whose family believes she is seeing the wrong type of man for her station in life. While at a high society party, the young lady apparently commits suicide by leaping over a cliff in a shimmer of ghostly light but, when searchers reach the bottom, her body has vanished without a trace. Meanwhile, John is trying to find the miscreant that robbed the Wells Fargo office of $35,000.

Once again, as our detectives investigate, it becomes clear their cases are connected and that Sherlock is involved yet again.

Another wonderful read, we again see the city of San Francisco as it was in the 1890s from the high society parlors of the wealthy to the Barbary Coast and Tenderloin dives and Carlisle-by-the-Sea, a collection of old trolley cars inhabited by wealthy bohemians. We learn more about our characters’ lives and pasts, as well. I once again look forward to the next in this series. Highly recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
