Fourth in Tonya Kappes’ Ghostly Southern Mysteries series this time we find Emma Lee helping Mamie Sue Preston find out who murdered her and how they did it. Emma is a “Betweener,” a person who is gifted to see ghosts of the murdered and help them cross over. She is also co-owner of the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home with her sister. Charlotte Rae. When she is not busy at the funeral home (or helping a ghost cross over) she is either helping her grandmother, Zula Fae Raines Payne, at her inn or spending time with her boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross. No one but Jack Henry knows Emma can see ghosts, the rest of the town thinks Emma is crazy, suffering from the “Funeral Trauma,”
Mamie Sue Preston was the richest woman in town and also its biggest hypochondriac. It may be a bit harder this time to solve Mamie’s first request since she was buried by O’Dell Burns, the other funeral home in town - she was buried without her teeth and she really wants to have them before she crosses over. . There are other mysteries from the past as well, like the unmentioned friendship between Mamie, Pastor Brown and Emma’s grandmother, Zula when they were younger and where did Mamie go when she left town so many years ago. We also have a million-dollar donation to Pastor Brown’s church that does not seem to be represented in the church’s upkeep or activities, a missing collection plate, Charlotte off on mystery trips and, oh yes, a second ghost, Junior Mullins, who also needs help finding out who murdered him.
These books are delightful cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist. Quick reads with interesting characters. The issue I have had with Charlotte seems to be resolved in this outing. I look forward to the next in the series. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
