Shadow Kin
by M. J. Scott
Roc, $7.99, 324pp
Release Date: September 6, 2011

In the world of Shadow Kin, most of the power is divided between the Blood Lords and the Fae; humans can wield some magics and can work cold iron, but if it were not for the Treaty between the Fae and the Blood Lords, humans would be quickly eradicated in the crossfire. Unfortunately, Lucius, a most powerful Blood Lord, is cheating, and he is using a half-Fae Shadow-walking assassin named Lily to tilt the playing field in his favor. Lily is addicted to no lesser blood than Lucian’s own; so, however unwillingly, she is very much his creature.

But when her next target proves to be a sun-mage, one who can dispel the shadows that allow Lily free passage from here to there, Lily gets drawn into the human domain and discovers interests and even loyalties that exert new pulls upon her. Told alternately from Lily’s point of view and from that of Simon, the Sun Mage, this is a lovely story or romance and self-discovery in a captivating realm of urban fantasy. ~~ Chris R. Paige
