New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong continues the atmospheric Haven's Rock series as Casey Duncan investigates a threat to their off-the-grid Yukon town.
Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are entering a new chapter of life as parents to their six-month-old baby. Their family is hidden away in the sanctuary town of Haven's Rock where they can live safe and private lives. But when they encounter hikers too close to the borders of Haven's Rock, they realize they're in danger of being exposed.
When they find one of the hikers dead the next day, they realize that their paranoia was justified, but they're no closer to finding out who these people were and what they were doing in the vicinity of Haven's Rock. Only by tracing the hikers' movements, as well as examining the recent behavior of their closest neighbors, the workers of a secretive mining camp, will they be able to figure out where the threat is coming from and shut it down. Otherwise, the lives of everyone in Haven's Rock--and their safe, secure new existence--are at risk.
Near the hidden town of Haven’s Rock Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, run into a pair of hikers while out for a walk with their baby. When they find one of the hikers dead the next day they begin a search for the other before she can stumble on their hidden town and expose it. As they search things become more complicated as they deal with another body and a possible spy in Haven’s Rock.
The action here takes place over the course of a very few days and we reach a very satisfying solution for the unwelcome mining operation next door. We do not really learn more about the pasts of our regular characters but we do learn a bit more about the overall past of Rockton and Haven’s Rock.
I really enjoy this series and its predecessor, Rockton. This outing seemed to be bringing us closer to a “happily ever after” for Casey and Duncan and the other permanent residents of Haven’s Rock and the end announcement that next year’s Haven’s Rock #5 will end the series is sad but not unexpected. There is a prologue with a small synopsis of the series and the characters so I guess the reader could read this without having read any of the others but the enjoyment would not be the same. This series is highly recommended, as are all Ms Armstrong’s works. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
