CASFS and WesternSFA are bidding to jointly host Westercon 75, the West Coast Science Fantasy Conference for 2023, in Tempe, AZ.

Should we win the bid, details will be as follows:

We'll run throughout the Fourth of July Weekend, from July 1 to July 4, 2023.

That's four days, Saturday to Tuesday, with an additional Friday preview night on June 30.

We'll be at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Phoenix Tempe at
2100 S Priest Drive, Tempe, AZ 85282.

This is right off I-10, fewer than four miles from Sky Harbor International Airport.

Room rates will be $92 (single or double), $102 (triple) or $112 (quad), which is even lower than Westercons 62 and 70.

Where is Tempe, AZ?

Tempe is located ten miles to the east of Phoenix, the capital of and largest city in Arizona. The hotel is here on Google Maps.

Within the state, it's 110 miles north of Tucson (I-10) and 153 south of Flagstaff (I-17).

Regionally, it's 363 miles east of San Diego (I-8, I-10) and 381 miles east of Los Angeles (I-10), 309 southeast of Las Vegas (US 93, US 60), 410 west of Albuquerque (I-40, US 260, US 87), 426 west of El Paso (I-10), 671 south of Salt Lake City (I15, US 89, I-17) and 857 southwest of Denver (I-25 to Albuerque).

Our function space at the hotel is surrounded by a large open air parking lot which is free for all guests and visitors.

For those who don't want to drive, Phoenix is home to Sky Harbor International Airport, to which all these cities and many others fly direct. 20 airlines fly into Sky Harbor. This is only four miles from our hotel and there's a free 24 hour guest shuttle between the two.

There is no train service to Tempe (or Phoenix), but Greyhound runs service to Phoenix from most regional cities and as far as Dallas and St Louis. Check for schedules.

How about the weather?

OK, you got us. It's hot. Really hot.

We can hope for a drop to 70° F, as happens once a decade in July, but it's not likely. Temperatures are more likely to range between our average July low of 83° F and our average high of 106° F. Those of you who attended Westercons 62 or 70 at the Tempe Mission Palms will know how hot it gets.

However, most of our function space is inside a single air-conditioned building. We're also prioritising the rooms in between that and the rest of our function space for occupancy by convention attendees.

Tell me about that hotel?

The DoubleTree by Hilton Phoenix Tempe has 270 guestrooms and our rate is $92 per night, which is much lower than most Westercon host hotels, even those used by Arizona's previous two Westercons, 62 and 70. That's for single or double occupancy. Triple is $102 and Quad is $112.

There are mobility and hearing accessible rooms available, which feature accessible tubs, visual alarm and notification devices on the doors.

We'll have access to all function space in the hotel, which totals 31,625 square feet, and all of it is on a single level. Most of it is in a dedicated conference center that includes our largest ballroom and smaller breakout rooms.

The on site Milagros Restaurant is open from 6.00am to 10.00pm daily, serving a varied menu with a southwestern flair. There's also a separate bar next door to the restaurant.

There's also a fitness center, a business center and a spa inside the hotel and a large outdoor pool and patio.

What if I want to wander the neighbourhood?

The DoubleTree by Hilton Phoenix Tempe is located right off I-10, in between Phoenix and Tempe, so there's a lot easily reachable by car or taxi in both cities. Downtown Tempe with Mill Avenue's many restaurant options is fewer than three miles to the northeast. Downtown Phoenix with even more is only ten miles to the northwest.

There are some options in the immediate walking area, including half a dozen of the usual fast food outlets within a third of a mile. More independent bars and restaurants can be found within half a mile.

Where's the nearest...?

Note: CASFS, WesternSFA and the Tempe in 2023 Bid do not endorse any of the above, which are listed only as "the nearest" of their type for informational purposes only.

Who'll be running this show?

We have two sponsoring bodies, as we do for our local sf/f convention, CoKoCon, which we first held in 2018. Both are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and each appointed a co-chair and a co-treasurer. All four of these, and our vice chair, belong to both organisations.

CASFS ran Westercons 35 and 45 (Westercolt .45), both in Phoenix, AZ. They currently co-sponsor CoKoCon and host a monthly book social. They have also run a local sf/f con (CopperCon), a gaming con (HexaCon), a conrunning event (SmerfCon) and a media con (PhringeCon).

The WesternSFA ran Westercon 57 (ConKopelli), in Litchfield Park, AZ. They currently co-sponsor CoKoCon and publish a monthly e-zine, The Nameless Zine. They have also run an anime con (AniZona), a gaming con (RandomCon) and a series of conrunning seminars (ConRunners).

Most of the concom has prior Westercon experience, especially from Westercon 70 in Tempe, from the chairs on down. We have two prior Westercon chairs on committee (57 and 70). Many of us have worked multiple Westercons, up to the most recent held, Westercon 74 in Layton, UT.
